30 dogs perish in Ibaraki fire

Thirty dogs perished in a fire that destroyed a house in Joso, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Monday. A neighbor alerted emergency services that a fire had broken out at the home of 76-year-old Fuyuo Kadoi at around 11:30 a.m. Monday. Firefighters fought the blaze for around 30 minutes, during which time Kadoi’s one-story bungalow and a large kennel in which breeding dogs were being housed, were burned to the ground.

No human casualties were reported, but 30 dogs, including Labrador Retrievers and Chihuahuas, were killed in the fire, police said. Kadoi was quoted by police as saying he had been cooking tempura at his home using a portable gas stove and had left the room briefly, at which point the fire broke out and began to spread.
