4,000 police search for rape suspect who escaped from prosecutors office in Kawasaki

Kanagawa prefectural police said Wednesday that 4,000 officers have been mobilized to search for a 20-year-old rape and kidnap suspect who escaped from the Yokohama District Public Prosecutors Office in Kawasaki on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Yuta Sugimoto, was arrested on charges of participating in a gang rape and abduction. Fuji TV quoted police as saying that he managed to unfasten his bindings while in an interview with his lawyer inside the prosecutor’s office. Sugimoto asked to use the restroom on the 4th floor of the building, two floors down from where the interview was being conducted. In the few short moments when he was not being watched by the officer in charge, Sugimoto slipped from his bindings and escaped the building. The officer gave chase but lost him.
